During the Great Resignation in 2021, many employees voluntarily resigned from their jobs in masse. COVID-19 forced many employees to reevaluate their relationship to work; widespread burnout coupled with more flexible and remote work opportunities led to mass resignations. As a result of the Great Resignation, many employers could not keep up with the pace of hiring to fill vacancies and were not finding qualified applicants. Many employers dropped degree requirements ad added or expanded professional development and education opportunities to show new hires and current employees a potential for growth and development.
Hiring continued to happen in droves. The 2022 economy favored job seekers, but the competition was increasingly stiff, with many people desiring jobs or roles that offered flexible schedules, reasonable workloads and remote work.

In spite of the systemic injustices impacting Black women, and the continued racism and gender discrimination they face, Black women have always had to learn how to stay one step ahead of the game. Society has often characterized the personal and cultural attributes that Black women bring to the workplace as a deficit—forcing many Black women to conform to a predominately white work culture.
