Most US mothers are working moms. Which means our day can start as early as 5 am and end at midnight. Sometimes running off 5 hours of sleep and endless cups of coffee. The duality of the various roles we play in society tug at us daily, but none like the role of mother. It’s beyond the 9-5 and very much a 24-7 role that we can never undo. It often can be very rewarding, painfully challenging, extremely fulfilling and highly purposeful. Let’s keep it real, there are times when your kid will make you so angry that you want to trade them for a do-over. LOL!
Although we bask in the celebration of mothers one Sunday out of the year, let’s remind each other that right now there is a Mom out there working today to feed her kids or at home working to prepare for the Monday morning grind, or packing her kids lunch for Monday, while making calls to schedule pick up for the after-school activities. Either way, taking time to celebrate ourselves and all we do as mothers should be 24-7!
During my pregnancy, my mom told me, ” when a woman gives birth she crosses over.” I gave her this strange look and asked her, “What the hell does that mean? It sounded so strange, like something from a movie. She didn’t explain to me what it meant. But I quickly realized soon after I gave birth to my daughter what she was trying to say. There are cycles of a woman’s life. Who you are at 20, will not be who you are at 3o and so on.
Becoming a mother is a permanent role in the duality of your identity and an unpredictable journey that some women easily embrace and transition into, while others struggle with. Either way, although the world only celebrates mothers one day a year, we owe it to ourselves to celebrate the most impactful, critical role we will ever play in our lives. You can change job titles, even change careers, but the one title you can never change once you cross over is being a mother. So why should mothers celebrate 24-7? Simply because we should and we can! So do your thing mothers, not just today, but every day.……you deserve it and Happy Mothers Day 24-7!
