Oak Grove School, a pre-K through 12th-grade progressive college preparatory school in Ojai, California is seeking an experienced and accomplished full-time High School History Teacher starting August 2024.

Oak Grove School offers an inclusive, integrated, challenging, college-preparatory, and highly engaging academic experience that also reflects the school’s philosophical underpinnings. The Arts of Living and Learning (inquiry, communication, academia, engagement, aesthetics, and care/relationship to self, others, the environment, and the world) inform both curricula and classroom practice.

Responsibilities:

Core academic classes include World History with an emphasis on Human Rights and Global Perspectives, US History with an emphasis on civics and citizenship, and a 12th Grade class focused on philosophy, ethics, and self-discovery. The teacher will also have the opportunity to develop Capstone projects with seniors through a curriculum that emphasizes self-reflection and personal growth.

Additionally, as part of the High School Team, teachers are responsible for one grade level of Advisory class.  Full-time teachers also participate in our outdoor education program, and have opportunities to travel with the students to India and other locales.

Qualifications:

  • BA in History, Philosophy, or a related field
  • Teaching Credential and/or MA in Education or History preferred
  • 3 years of teaching experience at the high school level preferred

  • Familiarity with a growth mindset, project/inquiry-based learning, core competencies, and authentic assessment
  • Self-motivated, self-disciplined, professional, enterprising, and energetic
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with students, parents, and colleagues
  • Ability to differentiate in the classroom and work with students with learning differences
  • Interest in fostering diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice to promote a healthy learning environment
  • Active enjoyment of the outdoors and nature. Flexibility to accompany students on multi-day trips.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective classroom culture conducive to student learning without the use of rewards and punishment
  • Ability to work as part of a close-knit team
  • Familiarity with the philosophy of the school (amongst other things an inquiry-based approach to education in a non-competitive atmosphere), and an understanding of progressive education will be an asset
